LeGaL Committees

LeGaL provides an opportunity for its members to play an active role in the organization through participation on its committees. If you are interested in joining any of the committees listed below, please e-mail info@le-gal.org (include the name of the committee as the subject header). The message should include your name, your employer and your contact information. Please note that committee membership is limited to lawyer members of LeGaL who are up-to-date on dues with the exception of the Law Student Leadership Committee Law, which may be joined by law student members without the payment of dues. Non-law students enjoying a complimentary first-year of LeGaL membership must become a dues-paying lawyer member prior to committee service.

In-House Corporate Counsel Committee

Matthew Merrick, Chair

Forum for counsel serving in-house at corporations. The committee will promote the professional interests of LGBT in-house counsel, conduct events for those interested in in-house counsel opportunities, liaison with other organizations to foster best practices, and provide opportunities for LGBT in-house counsel to network and share resources.

Judiciary Committee

Janice Grubin, Interim Vice Chair

Oversee LeGaL screening panels that evaluate candidates for judicial office and provide ratings; recruit and select designees to serve on judicial screening panels of other organizations; promote the interests of members of the LGBT community interested in serving within the judiciary; hold events and programs focused on the judiciary; liaison with the judicial community and promote the advancement of judges dedicated to equality and full representation of the LGBT legal community.

Law Student Leadership Committee

Promote the active participation of the law student community in the work of LeGaL. This committee will ensure that LeGaL is engaged with the law student community, enhance interaction with LGBT affinity groups at area law schools, assist with LeGaL programs impacting the law student community and organize networking and social events for LGBT law students while promoting networking and mentoring among law students and practicing attorneys.

Networking & Social Events Committee

Ken Sanchez, Chair

Organize social and networking events for LeGaL members and in conjunction with other organizations to promote a sense of community among members while expanding professional and social networks.

Partners Group

Joseph Evall, Chair

Forum for partners in large law firms and with corporate/institutional clients to network and share experiences and ideas; promote LGBT friendly policies within the law firm community; promote recruiting and mentoring of LGBT associates; work to improve the prospects of LGBT lawyers interested in serving on the bench and sponsor events of interest to large law firm community.

Pro Bono Service & Clinics Committee

Promote pro bono work by LeGaL members and enhance the LeGaL Foundation's ability to serve those in need of legal-oriented services. Oversee the activities of existing LeGaL clinics in conjunction with Clinic chairpersons (e.g., weekly Walk-in Clinic at The Center, monthly Long Island clinic), publicize the work of the clinics to membership and larger community, develop fundraising strategies to support pro bono efforts of LeGaL, develop volunteer recognition events and networking and social event opportunities for volunteers, and identify new pro bono service opportunities potentially in partnership with other organizations and institutions.

Solo & Small Law Firm Practitioners Committee

Carlene Jadusingh, Chair

Forum for LGBT solo practitioners and attorneys at smaller law firms. The committee will promote the professional interests of such practitioners, identify ways in which LeGaL can better support the work of such community, provide networking and business development opportunities, conduct forums aimed at assisting those interested in pursuing small law firm or solo practice, advise on LeGaL's attorney referral service, and ensure that LeGaL programming is responsive to the needs of the small law firm member/solo practitioner community.
