Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court continues effort

The Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which LeGaL is a part of,  is working to get the Senate to pass S.6783 (the companion bill of recently passed A.6060-A) which would improve state policy to allow fair access to civil orders of protection in NYS.  Currently, many victims of violence in our state cannot obtain a civil order of protection because they do not have access to the Court that grants them - NY's Family Court.  Current law limits access to Family Court to "members of the same family or household" which is defined as people who are married, divorced, related by blood or marriage, or have children in common.  Without access to Family Court, victims are not eligible to use the well-resourced Integrated Domestic Violence Courts, now available in 35 counties across the state.  NYS is the only state not to offer more civil protection to victims of domestic violence.

If you want to get involved with the coalition, please contact LeGaL’s representative to the coalition, Rick Landman, at rick.landman@nyu.edu.
