Welcome from the President of LeGaL
Welcome to LeGaL's website.
As you can see from the various listings on our site, LeGaL is an active and diverse law association. Through many of the activities described on the site, LeGaL seeks to serve the professional interests of our members, promote the advancement of both law students and LGBT legal professionals, ensure that pro bono resources are available to the LGBT community at large and educate the public on issues of concern to our community.
Our diverse membership includes individuals from all over the NY Metropolitan area (and even a few from around the world). We are especially proud of our outreach to law students from law schools all over the country. That outreach includes our Dr. M.L. "Hank" Henry Jr. Fund for Judicial Internships that provides judicial internships to law students with a demonstrated commitment to LGBT rights; a career fair for 1Ls; and our annual law conference.
We also continue to provide extensive pro bono opportunities, including our:
- Weekly walk-in clinics held every Tuesday at the LGBT Community Center in Greenwich Village where volunteer attorneys try to connect visitors with appropriate legal resources;
- Transgender name change clinic, run by LeGaL in conjunction with other organizations, held the 1st Monday of the month at the Center; and
- Monthly walk-in clinics on Long Island
In addition to these formal programs, many of our members perform significant pro bono work. LeGaL also continue to screens judicial candidates to help ensure a fair and strong judiciary.
Our community continues to face many challenges. As members of the LGBT legal community, we must share the responsibility of pushing to the forefront the issues that uniquely impact our careers and our families. LeGaL will continue to work to ensure that our voices are heard, our faces seen, and our contributions valued.
Please join the effort and feel free to contact us anytime with suggestions.
